RALEIGH, N.C. – Old Dominion grapplers Jack Dechow and Alexander Richardson each won their respective weight class at the 2014 NC State Open, while six other wrestlers placed in the top-10.
"Lenny Richardson and Jack Dechow were dominate on the day and put a lot of points on the board," said Head Coach Steve Martin. "We were impressed by their performances. Kevin Beazley was also impressive, as he had a tied match with All-American Connor Hartman from Duke with 20 seconds left in the finals. He had scoring opportunities to win the match. Jacob Henderson was impressive throughout the tournament, as he made the finals and lost to the NCAA champion from NC State in a close match. Matt Tourdot, Jacob Kingett and TC Warner all wrestled hard in their placement matches."
Dechow received a bye for the first round of the championship bracket and took on Mikey Thomas of UNC-Pembroke in round two. Dechow had no trouble with Thomas, winning by fall at the 3:58 mark. In the quarterfinal bout, Dechow defeated Tyler Patrick from Duke by a 19-4 tech fall. Dechow faced Jacob Kasper, also from Duke, in the semifinal round and came out with a 6-3 victory. Last season, Kasper started for Duke at 184 lbs. as a true freshman and record a 15-16 record and won the Hokie Open. In the first-place match, Dechow defeated Ville Heino from Campbell by a narrow 3-2 decision to earn the 184 lbs. title.
Richardson started out the day with two wins by fall over Tyler Haskin (TF, 17-0) of Chattanooga and Johnathan Gahagan (Fall, 0:57) of NC State to advance to the round two of the championship bracket. In round two, Richardson defeated Soloman Chishki of Virginia Tech by a 7-2 decision. In Richardson’s quarterfinal bout, he picked a narrow 1-0 decision over Jack Clark of North Carolina. Richardson advanced to the first-place match after taking down NCAA qualifier and No. 20 Kevin Birmingham by fall (5:21). Last season at the NC State Open, Birmingham got the best of Richardson, as he finished in second place. Richardson closed out the day and secured his first-place finish in the 149 lbs. division by beating Rodney Shepard from NC State by a 1-0 decision.
Kevin Beazley and Jacob Henderson each recorded a second-place finish at 197 lbs. and 285 lbs., respectively.
Beazley recorded back-to-back falls over Stuart Nadeau (UNC-Pembroke) and Ian Solcz (Davidson) to advance to the semifinal round. The fall over Nadeau came in just 18 seconds into the match, while the fall against Solcz was at the 1:57 mark. Beazley continued to dominate, recording a 12-2 major decision over Cody Brundage of Newberry in the semifinals. In the first-place bout, Beazley fell to All-American and No. 5 Connor Hartman (Duke) by a close 6-4 decision. Hartman qualified for the NCAA Tournament a season ago, where he finished fifth at 197 lbs.
Henderson started his day with a 5-3 decision over Matthew Moore from North Carolina in round one. In the championship round two, Henderson took down Matthew Voss of George Mason by a 3-1 decision in sudden victory one.
