BIRMINGHAM, AL – The ODU Soccer Monarchs (8-6-1/3-3-1) defeated UAB, 3-2 in a Conference USA match-up tonight behind the scoring of Tyler Edwards (Carrolton, GA.), Ryan Condotta (Keller, TX.) and Sidney Rivera (Hampton, NJ.).
The victory ended the Monarchs two-game losing streak. The Blazers drop to (9-6-1/4-3), and have never beaten the Monarchs in seven tries.
“Great win against a very good and nationally ranked opponent and most importantly a big three points in the conference race, said ODU head coach Alan Dawson. “I am Very proud of the Team.”
Monarch senior Sidney Rivera’s shot from 10 yards out put the Big Blue on the board first with an assist from sophomore Jesse Milralrio (Arlington, TX.).
In the second half, Ryan Condotta broke a 1-1 tie on a break a way, beating a Blazer defender with a shot from 12 yards out. Monarch Freshman Tyler Edwards would later intercept a pass and score on a shot from 18-yards out.
UAB, who defeated New Mexico Wednesday night cut the lead to one, 3-2 when C-USA’s leading scorer Freddy Ruiz scored his 10th goal of the season on a counter. The Monarchs outshot UAB 14-11 as sophomore goalkeeper Alex Tiesenhausen had three saves on the night.
The Monarchs return to action Friday night when they host FIU at 7 p.m. in senior night which will be the final regular season home match for Sydney Rivera, Skylar Hagan (Argyle, TX.), Nate Foglesong (Fredericksburg, VA.) and graduated student Christian Schroeer (Petershagan, Germany).
