BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – Old Dominion seniorTristan Warner won the 165-pound weight class, while five other wrestlers placed in the top-four at the 2014 Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open on Sunday in Binghamton, New York.
Redshirt senior, Tristan Warner, cruised to a 165-pound title. He won his opening bout by an 11-1 decision over Caleb Livingston of Penn State, who recorded a 7-11 record in open tournaments last season. In round two, Warner defeated Tyler Grimaldi (Harvard) by an 18-2 tech fall. Warner showed no signs of distress in the quarterfinal round, taking down freshman Ryan Preisch of Lehigh, 7-3. Tristan faced his toughest opponent in the semifinal round in Ivy League Honorable Mention selection and sixth-place finisher at the EIWA Championships, Jesse Shanaman (Cornell). Warner won the bout by a 7-0 decision and advanced to the title round. In the title match, Warner faced freshman Jonathan Schleifer from Princeton. Warner took home the title after defeating the Princeton rookie by a 3-0 decision.
Heavyweight Jacob Henderson went 4-1 in his weight class, including a win over NCAA qualifier Riley Shaw (Cleveland State) in the semifinal round, to place second. Henderson started the open with an 8-0 decision over Ryan Kail (Maryland) in round one. In round two of the championship bracket, Henderson faced First Team All-Ivy League grappler, No. 25 Jacob Aiken-Phillips, and won by a close 3-1 decision. Henderson won by a 4-0 decision over Connor Calkins of Binghamton in the quarterfinal match. The semifinal match proved to be a close one between Henderson and Shaw, as Henderson came out on top, winning in tie-breaker two with a 5-3 decision. Shaw placed third at the EWL Championships last season and earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament. In the championship match, Henderson fell to Tyler Deuel of Binghamton by a 4-1 decision.
TC Warner finished second in the 157-weight class after going 4-1 on the day, earning one fall (4:47) and one major decision. Warner started out the day with a fall (4:47) over Josh Ellis of Princeton. In round two, TC took on Craig Eifert (Finger Lakes Prep), who made the finals at this tournament last year, where he lost to national champion David Taylor of Penn State. Warner won by a narrow 10-9 decision to advance to the quarterfinals where he defeated Wayne Stinson of Rider by a 5-0 decision. Warner continued to win as he earned a 10-1 major decision over Vincent Deprez from Binghamton in the semifinals. TC’s run ended in the first-place match, as he fell by an 8-3 decision to Chris Dowdy of Cornell to finish second.
After losing their semifinal matches, Austin Coburn and Michael Hayes won the consolation bracket to place third in their respective weight class, while Matt Tourdot placed fourth.
Coburn picked up an 8-0 major decision in round one over Gino Gioielle (Cortland) and took down Troy Murtha (Princeton) by a 7-0 decision in round two. Murtha won 18 matches as a freshman, with eight of those coming by fall. In the quarterfinal match, Coburn faced Drew Garcia from Finger Lakes Prep and won via a 2-0 decision. Austin then fell to Honorable Mention All-Ivy League selection and No. 25 Duke Pickett from Cornell in the semifinals, but defeated Josef Johnson (Harvard) and Steven Schneider of Binghamton in the consolation bracket to place third at 174 pounds.
At 133 pounds, Hayes received a bye in round one, but took down Rob Person of Binghamton in round two by fall at 5:45 and Mike Kostandaras of Cleveland State by a 3-0 decision in the quarterfinal. In the semifinal bout, Hayes took on Chase Zemenak of Bloomsburg, but fell by fall at 5:00. Hayes bounced back in the consolation semifinal bout, winning by a 17-1 tech fall over Michael Andreano (Kean). Hayes faced Kostandaras for the second time on the day, this time in the consolation finals. Hayes once again claimed the victory over the Cleveland State grappler (8-2) to finish in third place.
Tourdot placed third at 285 pounds after making his way to the consolation finals after falling in the championship bracket semifinals. He posted wins by decision over Jeramy Sweany (Finger Lakes Prep, 11-5) in round one and Ray O’Donnell (Princeton, 6-2) in round two, who placed eighth at the EIWA Championships. He also defeated Amon Willis (Cleveland State, 8-3) in the quarterfinals. Tourdot fell to Binghamton’s Tyler Deuel (12-2) in the semifinals, but defeated Alex Henry of Franklin & Marshall (7-3) in the consolation semifinals. In the consolation final round, Tourdot fell to Shaw to place fourth overall in his weight class.
Kevin Beazley (197 lbs), Jacob Kingett (141 lbs) and Zach Wilson (149 lbs) also competed for the Monarchs.
