CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Old Dominion University men’s tennis team had a solid showing at the 2014 UVA Fall Classic this past weekend. For the second consecutive weekend, ODU freshman Javier Maestre advanced to a championship match of his respective bracket.
Maestre (Madrid, Spain) won his first three matches in Charlottesville this weekend to secure a spot in the Championship of the Blue Bracket, in which Maestre would drop to Cornell’s Stefan Vinti (6-4, 6-4).
Last weekend, Old Dominion freshman Michael Weindl (Neuching, Germany) advanced to the semifinals of the Elon Invitational. This weekend, Weindl lost his first match, before winning three matches in a row and advancing to the Consolation Finals of the Blue Bracket, in which Weindl would take down JMU’s Sebastian Salinas in a tight three setter (6-3, 4-6, 10-8).
Monarch freshman Theophile Lanthiez (Villepreux, France) also fell in his first match of the weekend at UVA; however, reeled off three straight victories to win the Drawback Championship of the White Bracket over Michell Meekers of Radford.
Darragh Glavin, a junior from Newbridge, Ireland went 2-2 in his four matches in the Black Bracket. Glavin won the Consolation Third Place Match over Liberty’s Jason Burgess (6-3, 6-1).
David Botti (Fr./Merano, Italy) won two of his three matches in the Red Bracket and beat Jose Manzano (Radford) for seventh place.
