NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion women’s rowing team opened up their 2014 fall season, hosting North Carolina in the Tail of the Lafayette regatta on Saturday morning in Norfolk.

The regatta consisted of racing along the Lafayette River for a 3700m eights course and a 2900m fours course. ODU had three boats entered in both races.

"Solid day of racing overall," said Head Coach Dan Garbutt. "The strenuous format generated great racing and provided valuable data as we move forward into the season. I'm very excited about the season."

The Varsity 8 defeated UNC in the first race of the day by 10 seconds, as they picked up a time of 12:15. The 2nd Varsity 8 claimed another win for ODU, finishing the course in 12:36 compared to UNC’s 12:41. UNC came close to finishing first in the 3rd Varsity 8, but the Lady Monarchs pulled ahead in the final stretch to finish in 12:54.

In the 8's second piece, UNC finished before the Lady Monarchs in the Varsity 8 and the 3rd Varsity, with the ODU boats finishing in 12:35 and 13:06, respectively. The ODU 2nd Varsity 8 once again finished before the UNC 2nd Varsity 8, finishing in a time of 12:35.

In the four’s, ODU’s varsity four came in second by just three seconds. UNC recorded a time of 10:49, while ODU finished in 10:52. The 2nd Varsity picked up a time of 10:48.7, 11.1 seconds faster than UNC.
