PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The 17th-ranked Old Dominion field hockey team held Providence scoreless en route to posting a 2-0 victory over the Friars on Friday afternoon at Lennon Family Field.
Both teams got off to a slow start offensively, with each team only recording three shots in the first 19:47. The Lady Monarchs were the first to capitalize and took a 1-0 lead over the Friars at the 19:47 mark off a goal from junior midfielder Sarah Breen (Melbourne, Australia). That marks Breen’s eighth goal of the season, which is currently tied for first on the team.
Senior forward Katy Fuhrman (Columbia, Pa.) added the insurance goal just 6:22 later. She sent the ball past the Providence goalkeeper via a reverse stick strike from the left side of the circle. With that goal, she is tied with Breen for first on the team with eight tallies on the season.
At the end of the half, ODU held a 7-4 edge in shots, while junior Megan Hept held the Friars scoreless, collecting three saves.
During the second period, both teams attempted four shots, but neither squad was able to find the back of the cage as the game ended with ODU on top. ODU picked up its fifth shutout of the season and improved to 10-6 overall and 3-1 in BIG EAST action, while Providence fell to 9-8 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
Hept played the entirety in goal for the Lady Monarchs and finished the game with four saves. She has notched five shutouts on the year. Deidra Clymer suffered the loss for the Friars, finishing the game with seven saves.
ODU will be back in action next Friday when it travels to Georgetown for a 12:00 p.m. contest.
