CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Old Dominion’s No. 30 ranked Carlos Lopez Villa’s run in the 2014 USTA/ITA Atlantic Regional Championships ended on Monday afternoon in the Quarterfinals to Virginia’s No. 80 Thai-Son Kwiatkowski. This year’s regional tournament has been hosted by the University of Virginia at the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center.
Kwiatkowski earned a No. 7 seed for the regional tournament this year, while be nationally ranked No. 80. Last year, Kwiatkowski was named the ITA Atlantic Region Rookie of the Year.
On Monday in the Round of 8, it was Kwiatkowski who defeated Lopez Villa 6-3, 6-4. The loss snaps Lopez Villa’s 10-match winning streak in the regional tournament, dating back to last October.
In the Round of 32 on Sunday, No. 30 Lopez Villa took down Michael Voscek from VCU in a tight three setter (4-6, 6-3, 6-4). Lopez Villa then faced Tomas Hanzlik of Penn State, in a match that Old Dominion’s right-handed senior won 6-3, 6-2, earning himself a spot in the Quarterfinals for the second consecutive year.
Singles and doubles champions earn a spot at the ITA National Indoor Championships, which will be played at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
