No. 9 Lady Monarchs Suffer Overtime Loss to No. 11 Wake Forest

NORFOLK, Va. – Despite taking a 4-2 lead eleven minutes into the second half, the ninth-ranked Old Dominion Lady Monarchs fell to No. 11 Wake Forest, 5-4, in overtime.

With the game tied, 4-4, at halftime, the Lady Monarchs opened the second half strong, scoring two goals in a span of 11:43. Senior Kelsey Smither (Suffolk, Va.) struck first with an unassisted tally at the 40:59 mark, while Megan Byas (Driffield, England) notched the second goal off a Nicole Goff (Collegeville, Pa.) assist at 46:43.

Wake Forest would answer with two goals in the final 10 minutes by Madi Julius and Emily Conroe to knot the score at 4-4 and send the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, the Demon Deacons took control and took the only shots of the period. They notched four shots with the golden goal coming off the stick of Julius from an assist by Anna Kozniuk.

ODU scored the first goal of the game when senior Katy Fuhrman (Columbia, Pa.) netted an unassisted tally at the 6:04 mark. The game then went into a lightning delay, but resumed 30 minutes later.

Byas would follow the Fuhrman goal with a tally off a corner taken by senior Rosario Villagra (Salta, Argentina) to give the Lady Monarchs the 2-0 lead, but Wake Forest would eventually tie the game to send it to overtime.

Junior Megan Hept (Chesapeake, Va.) played all 79:52 in goal for the Lady Monarchs and finished the game with seven saves. Valerie Dahmen played in goal for the Demon Deacons, making five saves while in net.

Wake Forest outshot ODU, 14-11, but the Lady Monarchs held a 7-5 edge in penalty corners.

Old Dominion will be back in action on Sunday when it travels to Liberty for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
