ELON, N.C. – Old Dominion’s true freshman Adam Moundir was crowned champion of the A1 Singles Draw bracket at the 2014 Elon Invitational on Sunday afternoon. ODU’s Javier Jover also advanced to the championship match of his respected bracket before falling in a tight three setter.
Head coach Aljosa Piric said, “I am very pleased with our fight this weekend. Guys stayed in the battle and fought through adversity. Congratulations to Adam for winning his first college tournament in his first semester on campus. Javier had a great tournament as well and came very close to winning his bracket, falling just short to a solid senior.”
Moundir handled NCCU’s Kert Kilumets (7-5, 6-1), JMU’s Sebastian Salinas (6-1, 6-2) as well as Garik Yedigarian of Coastal Carolina (6-1, 6-1) on his way to earning a bid to the championship match of the A1 Singles Draw bracket. In the championship, Moundir got the btter of Randy Phillips from UNC Greensboro (6-7(8), 7-6(4), 6-4), earning his first collegiate title of his young college career.
In the A2 Singles Draw bracket, ODU’s Javier Jover defeated Josh Swindler of UNC Asheville (7-6(4), 6-3), Elon’s Jordan Kaufman (7-6(4), 6-3) as well as Campbell’s Nicolas Raktin (6-4, 4-6, 6-2) in the semi’s in order to advance to the championship match. In the championship, Jover fell in a barnburner (4-6, 6-3, 6-3) against Coastal Carolina’s Kaue Periera.
Also in the A1 Singles Draw bracket, was Old Dominion’s Michael Weindl who claimed victory in his first two matches advancing him to the semifinals; however, Weindl fell to Randy Phillips in the round of four.
In the A2 Doubles Draw, Weindl teamed up with teammate Theophile Lanthiez to win their first match and earn a spot in the semifinals, which they would end up losing 8-4 to JMU’s Ruzic/Salinas, who ultimately went on to win the A2 Doubles Draw bracket.
