Villagra?s Overtime Goal Gives ODU a 2-1 Victory Over Delaware

NORFOLK, Va. – Senior forward Rosario Villagra (Salta, Argentina) scored the game-winning goal just 2:58 into overtime to give the Lady Monarchs a 2-1 win over the Delaware Blue Hens on Sunday afternoon at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.

Old Dominion (4-4) is currently on a three-game winning streak after taking down Monmouth (3-0), William and Mary (3-1) and most recently Delaware.

Delaware (4-5) netted the first goal of the game at the 23:56 mark when Marjelle Scheffers controlled a rebound and sent the ball into the right side of the cage.

ODU answered when Villagra notched an unassisted tally with 29:43 left in the first half. Neither team was able to score in the second half, as the game went into overtime. This marked the second game this season that went into overtime for the Lady Monarchs.

Just 2:58 into the overtime period, junior midfielder Sarah Breen (Melbourne, Australia) found an open Villagra for the game-winning goal. Villagra sent the shot well above the outstretched Emmeline Oltmans and tucked the ball into the corner of the cage to secure the win.

Junior Megan Hept picked up the win in goal for Old Dominion and finished the game with three saves. Oltmans suffered the loss, finishing with six saves.

Old Dominion dominated the shot chart, recording a 17-8 advantage in shots and a 9-4 edge in shots on goal. The Lady Monarchs also held a 7-3 advantage in penalty corners.
