Richmond Outlasts Old Dominion, 3-2

RICHMOND, Va. – Jessie Klamut and Madison Hogan each scored second-half goals to bring the game level, but the University of Richmond was able to hold off Old Dominion for a 3-2 win on Sunday.

The Spiders (5-4) struck first as Meaghan Carrigan tapped in a Meredith Lenox save from six yards out, giving Richmond a 1-0 advantage in the 22nd minute. Olivia Aha and Shannon Colligan were credited with assists on the play.

Both sides exchanged shots throughout the remainder of the opening half before Lindsay Egbers found the back of the net in the final minute to put Richmond up 2-0 going into the break. Egbers connected from five yards out on a lobbed pass. Richmond’s Darian Podmajersky and Samantha Cicconi picked up the assists.

Richmond outshot Old Dominion 13-8 in the first half, but Old Dominion led in saves 7-4. Each side had two corner kicks.

Klamut got things going for the Lady Monarchs (1-5-2) early in the second half, taking advantage of a misplay in Richmond’s backfield in the 52nd minute and scoring from 13 yards out. Five minutes later, Old Dominion pulled even as Hogan sent a loose ball straight in from eight yards out.

In the 61st minute, Olivia Aha drilled a 21-yard shot which hit the crossbar and was rebounded in off of Lenox’s back. The Lady Monarchs could not get another shot in as Richmond turned up the pressure to close out the game.

Richmond outshot Old Dominion 24-12. Lenox collected 12 saves, while Richmond’s Emily Kelly earned the win with four saves.

Old Dominion will conclude its six-game road swing next weekend with a 7:00 p.m. Friday game at Florida International and a 1:00 p.m. game Sunday against Florida Atlantic. The pair of games begins Conference USA play for the Lady Monarchs.
