NORFOLK, VA—Junior forward Josue Henriquez (Mesa, AZ.) and sophomore forward Jesse Miralrio (Arlington, TX.) each scored first half goals to lead Old Dominion University (3-2) to a 2-0 victory over Longwood (1-3-1) Tuesday night at the ODU Soccer Complex.
The win was the Monarchs third straight and ODU has not surrendered a goal in that stretch. The only two goals ODU has allowed were to top 10 ranked Virginia and North Carolina.
“Not giving up a goal the last three matches is the encouraging part,” said ODU head coach Alan Dawson. “Our defense has a bit of an edge to them. They have a lot of pride in not giving up a score the last three games. It’s from the goalkeeper to the back four who have been quite impressive for us, particularly the two centerbacks who have been a real rock for us on defense.”
The Monarchs struck early with 8:33 into the first half as graduate student Christian Schroeer (Petershagan, Germany) hit Henriquez on a break-a-way to give ODU a 1-0. The Monarchs added a goal with less than nine minutes left in the half as Miralrio gathered a loose ball and fired it in for a 2-0 halftime score.
The Monarchs outshot Longwood, 19-11 overall and 4-3 in shots on goal. ODU goalkeeper Alex Tiesenhausen (Graz, Austria) came up with three saves, while the Lancer’s keeper Carlos Canas had two.
ODU returns home to host old CAA rival UNC Wilmington Saturday night at 7 p.m.
