No. 17 Lady Monarchs Shut Out Monmouth, 3-0

NORFOLK, Va. ? The 17th-ranked Old Dominion Lady Monarchs shutout Monmouth and held them to just two shots the entire game en route to posting a 3-0 victory over the Hawks on Sunday afternoon at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.

The Lady Monarchs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead over the Hawks when senior forward Rosario Villagra (Salta, Argentina) scored off an assist from senior midfielder Nicole Goff (Collegeville, Pa.) just 1:30 into the game.

ODU continued to attack and took advantage of a penalty corner, notching a 2-0 lead at the 18:13 mark. Junior midfielder Sarah Breen (Melbourne, Australia) tallied the goal off the corner that was set up by Villagra and senior midfielder Kelsey Smither (Suffolk, Va.).

Monmouth had a chance to get on the board at the 25:49 mark when Carol Rengifo took a shot on goal, but junior keeper Megan Hept (Chesapeake, Va.) was there to make the save.

Junior forward Tiesha King (Melbourne, Australia) would score the third and final goal of the match for the Lady Monarchs at the 45:21 mark off another assist from Villagra. The ODU defense continued to stifle the Monmouth offense, as they allowed only one shot from the Hawks in the second half. ?

Hept recorded the shutout for the Lady Monarchs and finished the game with one save. Amanda Westerweller suffered the loss for the Hawks, playing all 70 minutes in goal and recording two saves.

Villagra paced the offense with one goal and two assists to total four points on the day. Breen recorded one goal on three shots, while King scored off her only shot. Rengifo and Amanda Schoenfeld recorded the only two shots for Monmouth.

ODU dominated the shot chart, holding a 13-2 edge and a 6-1 edge in shots on goal. The Lady Monarchs also had an 8-1 advantage in penalty corners.

Old Dominion will be back in action on Friday when it heads to William & Mary for a 5:30 p.m. matchup. Last season, the Lady Monarchs defeated their old CAA rival by a score of 4-0.
