NORFOLK, Va. – The 17th-ranked Old Dominion field hockey team was edged by No. 4 Duke, 1-0, on Friday afternoon at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex. All five games this season have been decided by just one goal.
The game remained 0-0 for much of the first half before Duke junior defender Hannah Barreca scored the only goal of the game off a penalty corner taken at the 33:24 mark. Senior midfielder Abby Beltrani set up the corner, while senior forward Jessica Buttinger made the stop at the top of the circle for Barreca.
The Lady Monarchs attempted five shots in the second half, including four shots off of corner attempts, but Duke goalie Lauren Blazing made multiple saves to keep ODU scoreless for just the second time this season.
Junior keeper Megan Hept spent the entire 70 minutes in goal for ODU and finished the game with one save. She has now totaled 20 saves on the season. Blazing also played the entirety for the Blue Devils and made three stops.
ODU held a slight edge in shots, 6-4, while also totaling six penalty corners compared to Duke’s two.
The Lady Monarchs return to action on Sunday when they host Monmouth for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
