WASHINGTON, D.C. – The No. 9 Old Dominion field hockey team fell, 1-0, against No. 19 American on Sunday afternoon at the William I. Jacobs Recreational Complex. The Lady Monarchs outshot the Eagles, 11-6, but were unable to put a goal in the net.

At the 29:37 mark in the first half, Natalie Konerth scored the only tally of the match off a Jess Davis assist as the Eagles took a 1-0 lead over the Monarchs. American held ODU scoreless in the first half, stopping all five of their shots and both of the Lady Monarch’s penalty corner attempts.

The second half proved to be a defensive struggle, as both teams were unable to notch a goal. ODU had many opportunities to score the equalizer, but again were unable to capitalize. Junior midfielder Sarah Breen led the ODU offense with three shots, including two on goal, while freshman forward Victoria Rezette took two shots, both on goal.

"It was a disappointing performance today," said Head Coach Andrew Griffiths. "American played together as a unit and we played more individually, so in the end the result was deserved. We will regroup this week and work hard to make some effective changes for Friday's game against Wake Forest."

Junior Megan Hept played all 70 minutes in goal for the Lady Monarchs, making three saves. Kate McBeath recorded the win for the Eagles and finished the game with six saves.

Old Dominion outshot American, 11-6, including and 6-4 edge in shots on goal. The Lady Monarchs also recorded eight corners, while American had none.

ODU will open up its home schedule this Friday when it hosts Wake Forest for a 5:00 p.m. contest. Last season, the Demon Deacons defeated the Lady Monarchs, 3-2, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
