NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion field hockey team, picked to finish second in the BIG EAST, recorded a 2-1 victory over the Michigan Wolverines in an exhibition game at L.R. Hill Stadium.

With 70 minutes of action ending in a 1-1 tie, the teams immediately went to a shootout, skipping the 15 minute overtime periods.  Junior goalkeeper Megan Hept (Chesapeake, Va.) was in goal for the shootout and stopped all but one shot as the Lady Monarchs won the shootout 4-1 and earned the 2-1 victory.  Rosario Villagra (Salta, Argentina), Kelsey Smither (Suffolk, Va.), Victoria Rezette (Wezembeek-Oppem, Belgium) and Sarah Breen (Taylors Hill, Australia) were each successful in their attempts.

Michigan was the first to score during the first half, taking a 1-0 lead at the 24:53 mark.  Courtney Enge netted the goal when she shot from outside the circle.  The tally counted because an ODU player inside the circle tipped the ball into the goal.

Emily Harting (Lititz, Pa.) scored the equalizer when she found the rebound off a corner and slipped the ball into the back of the cage with 6:47 left to play in regulation.

The Monarchs outshot Michigan, 13-2 overall and 9-2 in shots on goal. Old Dominion also earned eight corners to the Wolverines zero.

Hept recorded one save in her 70 minutes of action, while Chris Lueb tallied eight saves for Michigan during her time in the cage.

ODU will take part in one more tune-up at Maryland on Sunday before the Lady Monarchs open the regular season on Aug. 29 in State College, Pa. against Penn State at 5:00 p.m.
