With just one week before fall camp starts, ODUSports.com will take a look at a position group each day this week to get you ready for ODU Football.

Running Back Preview

Gone is ODU’s all-time leading rusher in Colby Goodwyn, but the run game will be filled with the capable legs of returners Gerard Johnson and Cam Boyd, and maybe a few newcomers as well.

Following a strong spring, Johnson heads into camp as the starter followed closely behind Boyd.

Boyd finished second on the team last season with 450 yards on 76 carries while scoring five times.  He rushed for a career-best 119 yards in the win over Rhode Island and also had a 70-yard touchdown run against the Rams, the longest run in ODU history at the time.

Johnson finished third on the team with 57 carries for 372 yards and five touchdowns.  He produced a pair of 100-yard games last season as a true freshman, carrying 17 times for 101-yards in the win at Norfolk State, and a 143-yard effort at North Carolina, including an 81-yard run that was the longest carry in school history.

Malik Moseley redshirted last season and he will vie for playing time this year while true freshman Ray Lawry will look to make an impact in the ODU backfield.  Lawry went to Kingsway Regional High School in New Jersey and rushed for 1,833 yards as a senior in 2013 and played in the 2014 Chesapeake Bowl High School All-Star Game.
