NORFOLK, Va. – Angie Hind, the head coach of the Old Dominion University women’s soccer team, announced on Wednesday afternoon that Mary Casey has been added to the Lady Monarch’s staff as an assistant coach.
“I am delighted to have Mary Casey join the coaching team here at Old Dominion,” said Hind. “Mary has a very strong playing background both at the collegiate level and also professionally. I believe that this experience will be really beneficial to our athletes, especially our goalkeepers. In developing the program here, I believe it’s important to have a staff that is passionate about developing our student-athletes and in creating a strong and successful program. Mary’s experience in coaching, teamed with her strong desire to positively impact this program are key, and why I believe she will be a great addition to our team. I am genuinely excited to work with her and have her as part of our new staff.”
Former Maryland standout Mary Casey will come to ODU after spending three seasons as an assistant coach at University of North Carolina Asheville.
“I am excited for the opportunity to work for an athletic department as supportive and enthusiastic about their student athletes’ success as ODU’s," Casey explained. Also to work with accomplished coach in Angie, who brings a wealth of domestic and international knowledge to this program. I look forward to helping them restore this program’s former success and reach new heights in the future. Go Monarchs!”
Casey was an All-Atlantic Coast Conference performer for Maryland and played professionally for the Northern Virginia Majestics of the United Soccer Leagues' W-League and was drafted by the Los Angeles Sol of Women's Professional Soccer (WPS).
Casey played both defender and goalkeeper during her playing career and was an All-ACC first team selection in 2008. She was named a team captain at Maryland her senior season and helped lead the Terrapins to an appearance in the Sweet 16 of the 2009 NCAA Tournament.
That season Casey anchored a defense that posted nine shutouts, including five of the Terps' first seven games. Maryland went 14-6-2 in 2009 as Casey posted 76 saves in goal while only allowing 22 goals over the course of the season. For her career with the Terrapins she played in 74 contests, recording 136 saves and 13 shutouts.
She excelled academically as well, earning a spot on the 2008 All-ACC Academic team. Casey was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Scholar All-American second team and the NSCAA All-East Scholar first team.
