VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Old Dominion University quarterback Taylor Heinicke was named the Hampton Roads Sports Commission Offensive Player of the Year Tuesday night at the organization’s annual Celebration of College Athletics Awards Dinner.
Heinicke had another outstanding season in 2013, completing 340-of-486 passes for 4,022 yards and 33 touchdown passes. He completed a school record 70 percent of his passes while also rushing for 348 yards and five touchdowns.
A native of Atlanta, Ga., passed for more than 300 yards nine times in 2013, including a 533-yard, four-touchdown performance in ODU’s first-ever win over an FBS program at Idaho. The 533 passing yards was the fourth most in a game by an FBS quarterback in 2013 and the second most in his career to only his NCAA Division I record of 730 yards he passed for in 2012 against New Hampshire.
It is the second-consecutive year Heinicke has won the award.
The awards dinner was held at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Virginia Beach. The banquet honored collegiate football and men’s and women’s basketball players from the colleges in Hampton Roads.
