RICHMOND, Va. – On Sunday, April 6, the Old Dominion University women’s soccer team took down the Rams of Virginia Commonwealth University by a score of 2-0.

After the game ODU head coach Angie Hind said she was, "Really impressed by the work rate and real desire shown today. The first half was a real battle and we showed we were more than equal to that, which against a strong physical team like VCU was really pleasing. The second half we played tough but also looked to get in behind them more and it paid off with two well deserved goals.”

In what was a very competitive first half with both teams having chances on goal, the VCU goalkeeper was brought into action early-on, with a back post chance falling to Melanie Oakes.  Only minutes later the Lady Monarchs had another chance with Madison Hogan looking for an early threat on the right. Hogan combined well with Jordan Jones to deliver a driven cross, which was narrowly missed by the dangerous looking Jessie Klamut.

The home team then responded with two strikes, which slammed off the ODU posts making the game a really exciting spectacle. A late first half opportunity fell to Grace Haverly, who pounced on the ball in the midfield and broke through to play a slotted pass to Klamut, who just narrowly missed the target.

In the second half the Lady Monarchs began to take it to the Rams, and with a solid defensive line to build from, began to find ways to possess and get in behind their opponents.

Another positive run from Jones and the defense saw her beat her opponent and bend the ball straight into the goal from a narrow angle for the Lady Monarchs to take a 1-0 lead.

At the other end of the field, Erin Kinz dealt well with a few breakaway chances to keep things solid in the back.

The game’s/ODU’s second and final goal came from great midfield play of Devin Dougherty, who got free and slotted a through ball into the path of Madison Hogan, who coolly slotted the ball past the keeper, lifting Old Dominion to a 2-0 advantage and eventual victory over in-state rival, VCU.

Hind concluded, “We had been working all week on our attacking play and of course to come away scoring two goals was great but I'm just as pleased with the work rate and real team commitment to our defensive game - I thought we did really well in that."
