MIAMI, FL--Taylor Ostrich had two hits for the Monarchs, but FIU freshman Chris Mourelle tossed a complete game five-hitter as FIU defeated the Monarchs, 1-0 today at FIU Stadium and keeping the Monarchs from sweeping the series. The contest took 2:05 to play.
Mourelle entered the weekend 13th nationally in earned run average fanned five, walked on Monarch to run his record to 6-0. The freshman righthander has a 0.59 ERA.
ODU's junior righthander Victory Diaz pitched five-plus innings giving up six hits with just one walk and no strikeouts. Brett Harris, Adam Bainbridge and Brad Gero came on to pitch scoreless relief.
The lone run came in the sixth inning as Julius Gaines led off with a single, stole second and came home on Louis Silverio's double to left.
ODU threatened in the seventh with one out as PJ Higgins singled with one out and Taylor Ostrich followed by a single, but were left stranded.
The Monarchs return home for a five-game home stand with Wofford on Tuesday (6 pm) and Wednesday (4 pm.), then a three-game C-USA series with East Carolina beginning Friday.
