NORFOLK, Va. – No. 56 Carlos Lopez Villa moves to 13-1 on the season, but the Tennis Monarchs lost a tough match against No. 59 Cornell at the Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center in Norfolk, Va on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Monarchs drop to 9-5 on the year, while No. 59 Cornell improves to 8-5 with their third straight win.
In singles, No. 56 Carlos Lopez Villa continued his winning ways with a convincing win over Sam Fleck (6-3, 6-2). Lopez Villa was the only Monarch to win a match, but Jonas Kuwert and Zvonimir Podvinkski were both in their third sets when the match was called with the clinch rule.
The Monarchs were unable to hold off the Big Red’s double’s teams, as they dropped two matches and gave up the doubles point. The team of Zvoninmir Podvinski and Koen Wiggemans were winning their match in a tiebreaker against Jason Luu and Colin Sinclair (7-7(5-1)), when the clinch rule was put into effect.
