PINEHURST, NC—ODU sophomore Ashton Newsom (Chesapeake, VA.) shot 74 in the first round and is tied for fifth at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate, just five strokes off the lead. The tournament is hosted by Pinehurst Resort and Country Club.
As a team, the Monarchs are seventh after shooting 314. Belmont leads the ten tournament field by three strokes over UNC Greensboro with a first round score of 299.
Newsom had two birdies and 11 pars on the day. Danny Pizetoski of the University of Richmond leads the individuals with a 69, two shots better than Ben Simpson of Belmont who shot 71.
The second round is scheduled for Monday with the final round on Tuesday.
