CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - ODU senior attacker Emily Austerberry scored five points on the night, including three goals but Old Dominion fell 19-8 to No. 16 Virginia Wednesday evening.
ODU (3-7) managed to score the game's first two goals as ODU won both opening draw controls and Lady Monarchs freshman Megan Cameron and Austerberry sent shots in the back of the net to give Old Dominion the 2-0 early lead.
Virginia came back less than a minute later and answered with the next four goals to give UVA the 4-2 lead. ODU junior attacker Jessica Liberty scored her 19th of the year with an assist going to Connor Carson to cut the Cavaliers lead to 4-3.
UVA answered ODU's goal with another four unanswered to take an 8-3 lead at 13:39 in the first half.
Old Dominion's Emily Austerberry gave the Lady Monarchs a burst of hope with her 21st of the season at 12:08 to make the score 8-4. However, the Cavaliers scored another four unanswered and put the game seemingly out of reach at 12-4.
Cameron got ODU on the board with her eighth of the season from Austerberry and the score was 14-5 Virginia at halftime.
ODU came out of the gate again scoring first with Christina Rea tallying her 15th of the season on a free position shot. Virginia scored the next five to make it 19-6.
ODU's Austerberry got the hat trick at 11:26 left in the second half with a second assist of the evening to Carson. Sophomore midfielder Mary Margaret McCaleb scored her eighth of the year to make the final 19-8 UVA.
Junior goaltender Karen Hayde received her third loss of the year. Hayde stopped four shots in net, while freshman Maggi Buckley made three saves on the night.
ODU tied UVA with 11 ground balls, but Virginia outshot ODU by a 32-17 margin.
Old Dominion maintained nine draw controls to the Cavaliers 20.
