NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion University women’s basketball player, Jennie Simms has been named the 2013-14 N.A.A.C.P. Female Athlete of the Year at ODU for excelling around the community while striving for academic excellence.
Simms, who transferred to ODU this past offseason from West Virginia University, is currently in the midst of redshirting this season due to NCAA regulations. However, the 6’0 forward from Accokeek, Md. has gone above and beyond what has been asked in regards to community service and giving back to the less fortunate.
Most notably, Simms has been mentoring three girls from James Monroe Elementary School in Norfolk, Va. Jennie led the Survivor Walk for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. The redshirt freshman has also participated in the John Yeates Middle School Family Fun Night, Fairlawn Recreation Center-Fall Harvest Celebration, Military Families Book Drive, ODU Homecoming Parade, as well as made multiple visits to local elementary schools leading up to NPS Education Day.
Simms attended high school at Riverdale Baptist in Upper Ma, ranked as the No. 87 overall recruit in the country and No. 20 at her position by ESPNUHoopGurlz. She ranked as high as No. 51 by both The JumpOffPlus and Blue Star reports and was listed at No. 62 overall by All-Star Girl's Report coming out of high school. In addition, Simms played locally on Boo Williams' AAU teams.
