Kelley Joins Elite Company, Lady Monarchs Defeat Navy 68-60 in WNIT

NORFOLK, Va. – Shae Kelley scored a game-high 22 points including 16 in the second half as the Old Dominion Lady Monarchs defeated Navy 68-60 Thursday night at the Ted Constant Convocation Center in the first round of the WNIT.

Early in the second half Kelley became just the fifth Lady Monarch to score 1,000 career points in just her first two seasons at ODU.

Starting for just the third time this season, Michelle Brandao tied her career-high with eight points and dished out a career-best nine assists to help lead the way for ODU.  All eight of Brandao's points came in the first half.

With the win, ODU will play at Auburn on Monday night, Mar. 24 at 7 p.m. EST.

Midway through the second half Navy went on a 10-0 run to take a lead but Kelley responded by scoring ODU’s next 11 consecutive points as ODU came back to take a 60-56 lead.

Chelisa Painter added a lay-in to make the score 62-56 to break Kelley’s streak at 11-straight points.

Jade Geif added a layup for Navy to make it a four point game but Becca Allison added three free throws and Tiffany Minor a layup as the Lady Monarchs defeated Navy 68-60.

First Half Notes

In a fast paced start, Navy jumped out to a 6-2 lead but a 6-0 run by the Lady Monarchs gave ODU its first lead at 8-6.  The teams traded buckets without a stoppage until the 11-minute mark with the score tied at 17. 

ODU took a 25-21 lead on a three-pointer by LaQuanda Younger but a jumper and a three-pointer from Audrey Bauer put Navy back on top 26-25.

The Lady Monarchs followed by scoring 10 of the next 14 points to take a 35-30 lead.  Brandao added her fourth jumper of the first half to spark the rally.

ODU finished the first half on an 8-2 run to take a 39-30 halftime lead.  Painter scored five of ODU’s eight points.

The Lady Monarchs shot a blistering 53 percent in the first half led by eight points from Brandao and six apiece from Kelley, Painter and Oigbokie.

Six of Navy’s 11 first half field goals came from beyond the arc as Bauer and Chloe Stapleton made a pair of three-pointers apiece.

Bauer led Navy with 17 points while Alix Membreno added 14 points.

Kelley also contributed 13 rebounds to go along with her game-high 22 points for her 17th double-double of the year.  Allison contributed nine points Painter added eight points and five boards whith Odegua Oigboike scoring six.
