North Texas Defeats Lady Monarchs 68-52

DENTON, Texas – In what was the first ever meeting between Old Dominion and the University of North Texas’ women’s basketball teams, it was the Mean Green who prevailed over the Lady Monarchs, 68-52, at the UNT Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.

North Texas came out of the gates knocking down long-range shots, as they hit four of their first five three-pointers, giving the Mean Green an early 14-7 advantage with 11:33 remaining in the first half.

To end the first half, Old Dominion’s Chelisa Painter hit a shot just before the halftime buzzer sounded to cut the Lady Monarch’s deficit down to seven (33-26). For the half, the Mean Green shot a blistering 41.9% from the field and 45.5% from downtown.

The Mean Green would continue their hot shooting in the second half, connecting on 52.2% from the floor and 50% of their shots from three-point range to pull off the 16 point victory.

Leading the way for Old Dominion were Chelisa Painter (six rebounds) and Tiffany Minor, who netted 15 points apiece on Saturday. Minor’s five made three-pointers is a new career-high. Galaisha Goodhope finished with 10 points and a game-high six assists, while Shae Kelley scored six points to go along with her game-high 14 rebounds.

North Texas was led by Briesha Wynn’s 17 points and six rebounds. Also in double figures for the Mean Green were: Alexis Hyder (15 points, 12 rebounds), Hannah Christian (13 points) and Laura McCoy (11 points).

The Lady Monarchs forced 12 NT turnovers and outscored the Mean Green 11-9 on second chance points.

For the game Old Dominion shot 30.5% (18-59) from the floor, 23.3% (7-30) from three and 40.9% (9-22) from the free-throw line. North Texas ended the ballgame, shooting 46.3% from the floor, 46.7% (7-15) from downtown and 64.7% (11-17) from the charity stripe.

First Half Notes
At the half, Chelisa Painter led all scorers with 12 points. Tiffany Minor knocked down two three’s, giving her six first half points. Shae Kelley was held to four points, but hauled down a first half high of seven rebounds. Galaisha Goodhope distributed four first half assists.

Leading the way for the Mean Green was Alexis Hyder, who netted nine points and grabbed five boards, while teammate Laura McCoy scored eight first half points. The Mean Green’s bench outscored ODU’s 17-1 in the opening 20 minutes.

For the half, Old Dominion shot 31% (9-29) from the floor, 15.4% (2-13) from three and 50% (6-12) from the charity stripe. NT connected on 41.9% (13-31) of their first half shots, 45.5% (5-11) from downtown and 66.7% (2-3) from the free-throw line.

The ODU Lady Monarchs return home on Saturday, February 15, when they will take on UTEP, at 7:00 p.m. Saturday’s game at the Ted Constant Convocation Center will also be Hoops for a Cure!
