NORFOLK, Va. – No. 44 Carlos Lopez Villa beat George Washington’s nationally ranked (No. 79) Francisco Dias, but it was the Colonials who defeated Old Dominion 5-2 at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon. The Tennis Monarchs are now 7-3 on the season, while G.W. moves to 2-4 on the year.

Though George Washington has an overall record of 2-4 on the season, they surely have played a challenging schedule, as all four of their losses have come against nationally ranked teams (No. 45 BYU, No. 55 No. 62 Cornell and No. 63 Dartmouth).

Old Dominion’s No. 44 Carlos Lopez Villa had his hands full on Sunday against No. 79 Francisco Dias, but it was Lopez Villa who proved to be too much in a thrilling three-setting 6-7, 7-6, 1-0(10-8). With the victory, ODU’s junior right-hander from Madrid, Spain advances to a perfect 10-0 on the season.

Also claiming a single’s victory for ODU was Zvonimir Podvinski who took down George Washington’s Ulrik Thomsen. Podvinski has been a consistent force thus far throughout the season for Aljosa Piric’s Tennis Monarchs, as the 5’11 sophomore from Zagreb, Croatia now holds a 9-2 overall record on the year while playing at No. 4 and No. 5 singles.

In doubles, Carlos Lopez Villa paired up with Jonas Kuwert for the fourth time this season and persevered to an 8-7(7-4) tiebreak victory over George Washington’s Francisco Dias and Julius Tverijonas. ODU’s tandem of Lopez Villa and Jonas Kuwert advance their double’s record together to 3-1 for the 2014 season.
