ODU Too Much for UTSA in 68-57 Victory - Young Records Career High

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Galaisha Goodhope led all scorers with 16 points, as the Old Dominion University women’s basketball teamdefeated the UTSA Roadrunners 68-57 on Saturday night at the Convocation Center. The Lady Monarchs now advance to 13-14 overall and 6-7 in the conference, while UTSA drops to 13-13 on the season and 4-9 in Conference USA play.

Also in double figures for ODU were Shae Kelley (seven rebounds) and Destinee Young (5-8 FG), who each scored 12 points and Tiffany Minor (10 points and eight rebounds). Young’s 12 points off the bench is good for a new career-high.

Freshman Destinee Young provided Old Dominion with a spark in the game’s first half for the second consecutive game, scoring six points all off mid-range jumpers in a 1 minute and 45 second span, lifting ODU to an early 10-8 lead after eight minutes of action.

With 7:23 left in the first half, the Lady Monarchs trailed 18-13 before Galaisha Goodhope scored six points in just a 54 second span, giving ODU a 19-18 advantage with 5:48 to remaining in the first 20 minutes.

With 4.1 seconds remaining in the opening half, Goodhope drove down the lane made, made a contested layup, got fouled and knocked down her free-throw to give Old Dominion a 32-28 lead at the half. Goodhope led all first half scorers with 11 points.

The Lady Monarchs started the second half on a 7-2 run; the Roadrunners responded with six consecutive points narrowing their deficit to 39-36 with 15:57 left in the second half.

Old Dominion would go on a 15-1 run to extend their lead to 54-37 with 9:45 remaining in regulation. The Roadrunners answered back with a run of their own, scoring the game’s next nine points, cutting their deficit to 54-46 with 5:53 to play in the second half.

The Lady Monarchs again answered UTSA’s run with a 9-0 run of their own, capped off by a Tiffany Minor three-pointer to give Old Dominion a 17 point advantage with just over three minutes remaining, in which they wouldn’t relinquish, going on to win by 11.

For the game, the Lady Monarchs used 40% (24-60) from the floor, 18.2% (2-11) from three and 72% (18-25) from the charity stripe. UTSA hit on 29.6% (21-71) of their field-goal attempts, 14.3% (3-21) from downtown and 75% (12-16) from the FT line.

First Half Numbers
At the half, the Lady Monarchs connected on 38.2% (13-34) from the floor, went 0-5 from downtown and hit six of their eight free-throws (75%). The Roadrunners shot 32.1% (9-28) from the floor, 33.3% (2-6) from three and 80% (8-10) from the free-throw line.

Next Up for the Lady Monarchs
Old Dominion will return back home to the Ted Constant Convocation Center Wednesday, February 26, when they will take on the Bulldogs from Louisiana Tech University at 7:00 p.m.
