Men's Tennis Outlasts UTSA Roadrunners 4-3 in C-USA Opener

NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion men’s tennis team (7-2, 1-0) won their first conference matchup of the season 4-3 against the UTSA Roadrunners (3-5, 0-1) at the Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center on Saturday.

In singles, the Monarchs got another early win in straight sets from No. 44 Carlos Lopez Villa over UTSA’s Yannick Junger (6-2, 6-1). This win extends his winning streak to 9, and is the eighth match that Lopez Villa has not given up a set. Darragh Glavin was the next Monarch to keep the ball rolling with a convincing straight sets victory over Eric Buchalter (6-0, 6-2). Dante Terenzio improved his record to 6-3 by defeating the Roadrunners’ Joel Rubio (6-2, 6-4). UTSA came back with two wins of their own, but were unable to match the Monarch’s will to win as Jonas Kuwert won the deciding match against Diogo Casa (7-5, 6-3).  

In doubles, ODU’s duo of Carlos Lopez Villa and Jonas Kuwert were winning their match seven games to four against the No. 16 ranked Joel Rubio and Tomas Stillman when the clinch rule was used to stop play.

Next Up for the Tennis Monarchs
Old Dominion will return right back to action tomorrow against George Washington at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center at 11:00 a.m.

About George Washington
The Colonials are coming off a loss to No. 55 Princeton (0-4) in the ECAC Indoor Championship. G.W. is led by No. 79 singles player Francisco Diaz and reigning A-10 Rookie Performer of the Week Julius Tverijonas. The two are also a successful doubles pair with a record of 4-1. George Washington has also faced the likes of No. 63 Dartmouth (L, 0-4), No. 45 BYU (L, 3-4), and No. 62 Cornell (L, 4-1). Greg Munoz is in his eighth season as head coach of the men's tennis team at George Washington University. Munoz led the Colonials to their fourth straight Atlantic 10 Championship match in 2013. They captured the A-10 Championship in 2011 and in 2012. Munoz was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year in 2012.
