Monarchs Travel to Liberty & VCU

NORFOLK, VA—The ODU Baseball Monarchs (1-2) return to action on the road to Lynchburg to take on Liberty on Tuesday and then to Richmond to play VCU on Wednesday at the Diamond. Game-time for both are 3 p.m.

Through the first three games Monarch junior outfielder Taylor Ostrich leads the team with a .364 batting average, followed by infielder P.J. Higgins at .357.   Both have crossed home plate a team best three times.   Josiah Burney leads in RBI’s with four and along with Ben Slaton have hit one homer each. Sophomore righthander Tommy Alexander pitched five scoreless innings in a no decision against VCU.  

The Flames will start lefthander Blake Fulghum (0-0/0.00), while ODU will counter with senior righthander Brett Harris. The Flames (1-2) are led by Nick Lacik and Dalton Britt, both hitting .417, while Jared Lyons is 1-0 with a 1.59 earned run average.

SERIES: ODU leads: 34-21.  Liberty won both contests last year. ODU last defeated the Flames in 2009, 2-1 and 7-2.

The Rams (3-0) won all three games in the Georgia Tech MidCity Tournament as freshman infielder Matt Davis hit .538 and was named the Atlantic 10 Newcomer of the Week.  VCU is scheduled to throw righthander  Daniel Concepcion.

SERIES: ODU leads: 87-58. The Rams won the first meeting Saturday in Atlanta, 6-3. The two teams will play again later in the season on March 26 in the Hampton’s War Memorial Stadium in the Key Dog Classic.

The Monarchs home opener is Friday afternoon against St. John’s in the ODU baseball Invitational which will include Kentucky and Saint Joseph’s.
