Monarch Men Win FIU Invitational

NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion University men’s swimming and diving team took first place at the FIU Invitational while the women’s team finished in sixth.

The Monarch men took first place in five different events, while senior Sidni Hoxha won both the 50 and 100 meter freestyle and also took second in the 50 breast stroke.  Hoxha won the 50 free with a time of 21.05 while winning the 100 free with a time of 46.84.  He holds the ODU school record in both events.

The meet started for the men with a second place finish in the 200 medley relay, as Dan Chalfant, Jason Haigh, Vitor Sa and Hoxha completed the race in 1:33.65.

Nick Hooper and Francisco Byrne followed with consecutive third place finishes, in the 200 free and 100 back stroke, respectively.

Vitor Sa put together a strong race in the 50 butterfly, coming in second place with a time of 23.38.

The Monarchs took second and third in the 500 freestyle as Hooper delivered a time of 4:40.57 while Bernardo Figuiredo finished right behind him at 4:42.69.

Sa continued his solid meet by just edging out Byrne to win the 100 butterfly in a time of 51.19 while Bryne took second in 52.26.

Eddie Hubert followed with a first place finish in the 100 intermediate with a time of 52.32 while the 200 freestyle relay team of Sa, Jason Zeidler, Hubert and Hoxha took first place with a time of 1:24.62.

Danny Rabe ended the meet for the men with a second place finish in the 3-meter dive.

The women started the day with a fourth place finish in the 200 relay as Colleen VandePoel, Mackenzie Payment, Julia Vido and Juliana dos Santos had a time of 1:50.00.

Yesim Giresunlu delievered the Lady Monarchs’ a first place finish in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:04.76.

Dos Santos earned a second place in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.55.

Rachel Eckert ended the day with a pair of second place finishes in the 1 and 3-meter dives.

The Monarchs return to action on Saturday, Jan. 18 when they host East Carolina at the J.C. Scrap Chandler Pool at 1 p.m.
