NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion University women’s basketball team (6-7) will return home for their final non-conference affair of the season, as the Lady Monarchs will take on the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University (5-6) on Sunday, Jan. 5, at 2:00 p.m. at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.

ODU and North Carolina Central have only met one time before Sunday’s showdown, and that was last season in Norfolk on Dec. 7, 2012, when the Lady Monarchs defeated the Lady Eagles by a score of 59-33.

Sunday’s game will be aired live with the voice of the Lady Monarchs, Doug Ripley, and former Lady Monarch assistant coach, Susan Montgomery handling the color duties. The 2013-14 North Carolina Central Lady Eagles (5-6)
North Carolina Central enters their third season of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference competition under second-year head coach, Vanessa Taylor, with a 5-6 overall record.

Jessica Freeman is currently a graduate student at NCCU and leads the Lady Eagles in scoring to this point with a 13.7 ppg average. Freeman transferred to NCCU after playing her first three seasons at UNCW, where last season she led the CAA in minutes played per contest (36.8). In 2011-12, Freeman scored 16 points and grabbed 7 rebounds against ODU. Last season against the Lady Monarchs, Freeman went for 11 points, 4 assists and 3 steals.

Racquel Davis averages 12.8 ppg and grabs 8.8 boards per contest, while Khyra Conerly is third on the team in scoring, averaging 9.9 per outing.

The Lady Eagles return only two letterwinners from the team a year ago, while welcoming 11 newcomers to the court this season. Sophomore Tisha Dixon tops the list of returners for the Lady Eagles, as she finished the regular season fifth in the MEAC in rebounding with 8.2 rebounds per game while collecting 238 rebounds and 232 points during her rookie season. Lone senior Tiffany Gary is the only Lady Eagle to appear in all 30 contests with 21 starts. As a junior she averaged 32.0 minutes per game, collected 161 rebounds (5.4 rebounds per game) and amassed 112 points. North Carolina Central was picked to finish last in the MEAC this season.

The 2013-14 Old Dominion University Lady Monarch’s (6-7)
Head coach Karen Barefoot and her Lady Monarchs are coming off a very impressive month of December, as they went 4-2 in their six contests in the final month of 2013.

Old Dominion is led by Shae Kelley (16.7 points, 10.7 rebounds), Tiffany Minor (8.8 ppg) Stephanie Gardner (8.4 ppg), Chelisa Painter (7.8 ppg, 5.2 rebounds) and Galaisha Goodhope (7.5 ppg). The Lady Monarchs are averaging 68.3 points a game and hitting 39.2 percent of its field goals on the season.

Looking forward, this will be the Lady Monarchs final non-conference contest before their first ever competition in a new conference, the C-USA, officially begins.

In ODU’s last outing, the Lady Monarchs (6-7) fell to the No. 3 ranked Duke Blue Devils (13-1), 87-63, at Cameron Indoor Stadium in front of 4,450 fans this past Thursday night. Tiffany Minor led the way for the Lady Monarchs as she recorded her career high in points with 20 on 8-13 shooting from the floor.

LaQuanda Younger also set a new career high for points in a game, as she ended with 15 points on 5-7 shooting from behind the arc.

By the 3:40 mark in the first half, Duke held their largest to that point (15), before Younger went off and drilled four three-pointers to pull Old Dominion as close as six points (38-32). Duke would close the half on a 7-0 run and take a 45-32 advantage into the locker room.

Tricia Liston led the way for No. 3 Duke, scoring all 17 of her points in the first half. Oderah Chidom scored 13 points on 6-7 shooting in just 11 minutes of work. Also in double figures for the Blue Devils, were Elizabeth Williams (12 rebounds) and Alexis Jones, who each scored 12 points on Thursday night.

Galaisha Goodhope went for eight points and three assists against the Blue Devils, while both Shae Kelley and Chelisa Painter added 6 points apiece.

As a team, Duke connected on 36-69 (52.2%) of their field goals, shot 6-16 (37.5%) from three and hit 9-15 (60%) of their free-throws. The Lady Monarchs drilled 24-56 (42.9%) of their FG attempts, made 9-22 (40.9%) from downtown and went 6-13 (46.2%) from the charity stripe.

-ODU's 119 points in exhibition vs. Davis & Elkins marks most points scored in the Ted Constant Center (Nov. 3).
-ODU scored 97 points vs. Del St in season opener and recorded 83 shots (Nov. 9).
-Sr. Stephanie Gardner scored a career high 21 points vs. Del St (Nov. 9).
-ODU's recruiting class ranked No. 43 overall, 1st in C-USA by All-Star Girls Report (Nov. 15).
-So. Galaisha Goodhope recorded career high 6 steals over Radford (Nov. 17).
-Jr. Shae Kelley had a monster day vs. host Ohio State in HOF Classic – 16 Rebounds, 21 points (Nov. 22).
-Jr. Tiffany Minor scored a career high 14 points and 8 rebounds vs. Marist in HOF Classic. Also, Sr. Stephanie Gardner recorded career high 7 assists in heartbreak battle vs. Marist in HOF Classic (Nov. 24).
-Jr. Shae Kelley was named Player of the Game vs. Boston Univ. in the Inaugural HOF Challenge (Dec. 1).
-Lady Monarchs smash attendance record at Education Day 8,086 (Dec 4).
-Sr. Becca Allison scores career high 17 points vs. UMass (Dec. 4).
-Newcomer Chelisa Painter scores career high 14 points vs. UMES (Dec 7).
-Jr. Shae Kelley was 1st Basketball Player to receive CUSA Player of the Week (Dec 9).

-Fr. Destinee Young sparks Lady Monarchs (who never trailed) with career high 7 rebounds vs. William & Mary (Dec. 21).
-Fr. Odegua Oigbokie sets and ties career high scoring, 9 points vs. Va. Tech & VCU.
-Lady Monarchs earned 1st ever 3.0 team GPA (since tracking team GPA's in 2002)
-The Lady Monarchs and head coach Karen Barefoot were extremely active in giving back to the Community in 2013: Komen, Children's Hospital, Team spoke at dozens of Elementary and Middle Schools and active with promoting fitness, Norfolk Parks and Recreation Play Day and numerous on and off campus events. Coach Barefoot also hosted a FREE Coaches Clinic and spoke to various groups and organizations.

Looking Ahead for the Lady Monarchs
The Lady Monarchs will open up conference play on Wed., Jan. 8, at Charlotte for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff.
