Lady Monarchs Travel to So. Miss. Wed. for 8PM (EST) Tipoff

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Old Dominion University women’s basketball team (7-9, 0-2) will travel to take on Southern Miss. (13-2, 2-0), this Wednesday, January 15, at the Reed Green Coliseum. Tipoff is slated for 8:00 p.m. EST.

The 2013-14 So. Miss. Lady Eagles (13-2, 2-0)
Ninth-year coach Joye Lee-McNelis has her Lady Eagles off to their best start since the 2004-05 season, after So. Miss. was selected to finish 13th out of the 16 in the C-USA Pre-Season Poll. Leading the way so far this season for the Lady Eagles are: Tamara Jones (16.5 ppg/6.9 rpg), Jamierra Faulkner (14.4 ppg/3,5 rpg), Brittanny Dinkins (9.9 ppg/3.5 rpg) and Ashley Folsom (8.0 ppg/3.9 rpg).

Faulkner, who was a preseason All-C-USA selection, led the team in scoring a season ago at 19.0 points per game and dished out a league-leading 6.6 assists per contest. Currently, Faulkner is averaging a 9.0 assists a game, which leads the entire country.

The Lady Eagles' two losses this season came at the hands of Hampton (74-58) and Mississippi State (71-61). So. Miss is currently 2-0 in conference play this season, after defeating La. Tech (67-56) and then most recently UTSA (70-57).

The 2013-14 Old Dominion University Lady Monarch’s (7-9, 0-2)
Old Dominion finished a very difficult non-conference slate with a 7-7 overall record and went 4-2 in December. Since then, the Lady Monarchs dropped their first two games in conference play to Charlotte and Tulane.

To this point, the Lady Monarchs have been led by: Shae Kelley (16.3 points, 10.5 rebounds), Tiffany Minor (8.9 ppg/4.1 rpg), Stephanie Gardner (8.6 ppg), Chelisa Painter (7.3 ppg, 4.9 rpg) and Galaisha Goodhope (7.3 ppg). The Lady Monarchs are averaging 67.3 points a game and hitting 39.5 percent of its field goals on the season.

On average, Old Dominion forces 18.6 turnovers per game and collects 9.2 steals per contest.

On Wednesday night in Hattiesburg, Miss., Shae Kelley will be seeking her 11th double-double of the season.

The Lady Monarch's Last Time Out
In what was the Conference USA home opener for the Lady Monarchs fell to Tulane (11-4) by score of 92-62 at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. ODU’s Shae Kelley recorded her 10th double-double of the season in a 19 point (6-12 FG and 7-10 FT) and 10 rebound performance on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Monarchs shot the ball well from the floor in the second half, nailing 13 of their 28 field-goal attempts (46.4%) and 12-15 (80.0%) from the charity stripe.

Old Dominion’s Tiffany Minor shot 7-12 from the floor, good for 17 points, as well as hauled down four rebounds. Lady Monarch senior, Becca Allison scored nine points (3-5 FG and 3-3 FT), dished out two assists and brought down one rebound. Galaisha Goodhope went for five points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals on Saturday.

Looking Ahead for the Lady Monarchs
Old Dominion will return home to the Ted Constant Center for Alumni Night on  Saturday, Jan. 18, at 7 p.m., when they will square-off on the hardwood against FAU.
