DURHAM, N.C. – The Old Dominion University women’s basketball team (6-6) will travel to take on No. 3 ranked Duke University (12-1) on Wednesday, January 2, at 6:30 p.m. The Lady Monarchs claimed victory in four of their six contests in the month of December.

The No. 3 Duke Blue Devils’ Head Coach – Joanna P. McCallie
The ACC Coach of the Year in 2010, 2012 and 2013, head coach Joanne P. McCallie enters her seventh season at the helm of the Blue Devils’ program. Coming off of leading the Blue Devils to their fourth straight ACC regular season title, third ACC Championship and fourth consecutive Elite Eight appearance, McCallie will direct one of the most talented squads in school history in 2013-14 as Duke returns all five starters and 93.7 percent of its scoring from last season.

In just six years, McCallie has guided the Blue Devils to a 174-35 overall record, a 77-13 mark in ACC action and six NCAA Tournament selections, including a No. 1 seed in 2009 and four straight Elite Eight appearances. She has led Duke to four consecutive ACC regular season titles in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 and three ACC Championships in 2010, 2011 and 2013. Her 85.6 winning percentage in ACC contests ranks first on the conference’s all-time coaching charts. Meanwhile, Coach McCallie’s winning percentage of 83.3 in all games is first among active coaches in the ACC.

The 2013-14 No. 3 Duke Blue Devils
Coming off 10-day break since downing fifth-ranked Kentucky prior to the Christmas holiday, the third-ranked Duke women’s basketball team (12-1) will close non-conference play for the 2013-14 campaign against the Lady Monarchs. The Blue Devils have won 63 straight games versus home unranked non-conference opponents.

Eleven of Duke’s 14 rostered players were prep All-Americans when recruited from high school. Chelsea Gray, Elizabeth Williams and Tricia Liston were named to the 30-player Wooden Award preseason watch list. Gray and Williams were first-team All-ACC and AP All-America last season. Sophomore guard Alexis Jones was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2013 ACC Tournament.

Tricia Liston has opened the season on fire, averaging 17.4 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 0.6 steals. She is coming off netting a season-high 28 points at fifth-ranked Kentucky along with six rebounds. Liston is hitting 47.9 percent from downtown and 55.9 percent from the field.

The 2013-14 Old Dominion University Lady Monarch’s (6-6)
Head coach Karen Barefoot and her Lady Monarchs are coming off a very impressive month of December, as they went 4-2 in their six contests in the final month of 2013.

Old Dominion is led by Shae Kelley (17.6 points, 11.3 rebounds), Stephanie Gardner (9.0 points, 14 treys) and Chelisa Painter (8.0 points, 5.3 rebounds).The Lady Monarchs are averaging 68.8 points a game and hitting 39.0 percent of its field goals on the season.

Looking forward, ODU has just two more non-conference games (Duke and North Carolina Central) before first ever competition in their new conference, the C-USA, officially begins.

In ODU’s last outing, the Lady Monarchs trailed former conference foe, VCU, by four points (41-37) at halftime. Virginia Commonwealth managed to stretch their lead to 66-49 with 11:32 left in regulation, before the Lady Monarchs would fight their way back into the ballgame, trailing just 66-60 with 8:39. That would be as close as ODU would get the rest of the way.

Against the Rams, Shae Kelley led the way for ODU with 23 points and 10 rebounds, giving the junior her eighth double-double of the season and fifteenth of her career. Also in double figures for the Lady Monarchs were Chelisa Painter and Galaisha Goodhope (five steals), who scored 11 points apiece.

For the game, VCU shot 47.8% (32-67) from the floor, 37.5% (6-16) from three and 78.6% (11-14) from the free-throw line; ODU shot 41.0% (25-61) from the floor, 29.4% (5-17) from behind the arc and 68.4% (13-19) from the charity stripe.

-ODU scored 97 points vs. Del St in season opener and recorded 83 shots (Nov. 9).
-Sr. Stephanie Gardner scored a career high 21 points vs. Del St (Nov. 9).
-ODU's recruiting class ranked No. 43 overall, 1st in C-USA by All-Star Girls Report (Nov. 15).
-So. Galaisha Goodhope recorded career high 6 steals over Radford (Nov. 17).
-Jr. Shae Kelley had a monster day vs. host Ohio State in HOF Classic – 16 Rebounds, 21 points (Nov. 22).

-The Lady Monarchs and head coach Karen Barefoot were extremely active in giving back to the Community in 2013: Komen, Children's Hospital, Team spoke at dozens of Elementary and Middle Schools and active with promoting fitness, Norfolk Parks and Recreation Play Day and numerous on and off campus events. Coach Barefoot also hosted a FREE Coaches Clinic and spoke to various groups and organizations.
