BLACKSBURG, Va. – ODU senior forward Tim Hopkinson has been selected Player of the Year in the State of Virginia by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VASID). Joining him on first team was Monarchs senior defender Jason Gaylord. Ten different programs from across the Commonwealth of Virginia were represented on the 2013 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) University Division All-State Men’s Soccer team. Joining Hopkinson in the major awards were Virginia’s George Gelnovatch and Jordan Allen were voted Coach and Rookie of the Year, respectively. Hopkinson, a second team All-American by the NSCAA and College Soccer News was a first team NSCAA All-South Region selection and semifinalist for the prestigious MAC Hermann Trophy where he was the top vote getter in the fan poll. Hopkinson was Conference USA’s Offensive Player of the Year, and was selected to the All-Tournament team.
A first team All-C-USA selection, Hopkinson led C-USA in total goals and total points and scored his second career hat trick with 3 goals vs. VMI. The team co-captain was selected C-USA Player of the Week on Sept. 23rd and on Oct. 14th, and NSCAA National Player of the Week on Oct. 15th. He ranks 11th nationally in total goals with 12, and 15th nationally in total points with 28. Hopkinson finished his career at ODU as the school’s fourth all-time leader with 33 career goals, third all-time at ODU in career points with 85 and seventh all-time in career assists with 19. He also had a league best six game-winning goals this season.
ODU defensive leader Jason Gaylord was also selected to the first team All-State squad.
Gelnovatch led the Cavaliers to another College Cup appearance. Under his leadership, the team achieved a 13-6-5 record, including marquis wins over teams such as UCONN, Wake Forest, Marquette, and eventual National Champions Notre Dame.
Allen had a standout freshman campaign as he ranked in the team’s top 5 in goals, assists and points. Allen put away three goals and tallied five assists this season. He was named a Second-Team All-South Atlantic Region selection, a Third-Team All-ACC selection and was selected to the ACC All-Freshman Team.
The Virginia Sports Information Directors name 27 all-state teams in 15 sports each year, as well as an academic all-state squad and an all-sports champion in both the university and college divisions. Membership in VaSID is open to all media relations professionals working at a university or conference in the state of Virginia.
