The UMass Lowell River Hawks (0-7)
UMass Lowell, in its first year as a Division I, was selected ninth out of nine teams in the America East Preseason Poll. So far this season, the River Hawks are 0-7 overall. UMass Lowell is averaging 34 three-point attempts while connecting on 7.3 of those tries per contest to this point (21.4%).

The River Hawks are led by third year head coach Sarah Behn. In her first two seasons at the helm, Behn led the River Hawks to a 29-25 overall record. Last season, UMass Lowell finished with its best record in 10 years with an 18-9 clip, and 15-7 in conference play. Their 81.5 point-per-a-game last season was good enough for second in all of Divsion II. Leading the charge was senior Bianca Simmons with a nation’s best 28.2 PPG. Behn welcomes virtually a new squad, albeit talented, with 11 newcomers and four veterans. Back from last season is sophomore forward Lindsey Doucette (4.8 ppg) and sophomore guard Melissa Frase (4.6 ppg).

Behn is also hopeful on junior transfers Jasmine McRoy, who was a junior college All-American at Monroe (N.Y.) College; and Shannon Samuels, a standout at Roxbury Community College the past two years. Samuels is currently leading the way in the scoring department through the first seven games, averaging 15.3 a ballgame; while McRoy is also performing well on the hardwood as the River Hawks second leading scorer with 11.3 PPG.

The sixth head coach in the program’s 36-year history, Behn enjoyed a spectacular playing career at Boston College (1989-93) where she became the only four-time Big East Conference all-star in BC women’s basketball history and two-time Kodak All-American. She remains the all-time leading scorer in Big East regular season games with 1,546 points (67 games). For her career, Behn compiled 2,523 points.

The Old Dominion University Lady Monarchs (3-4)
ODU looks to push their overall record back to .500 on Wednesday after coming off the fourth and final game of the first ever James Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Challenge, in which the Lady Monarchs defeated Boston University (2-6), 62-56, at the MassMutual Center on Sunday afternoon. Sunday’s game was a tale of two halves, as the Lady Monarchs only led for a total of 1:19 in the first half but would never trail for the entire second half.

Galaisha Goodhope finished with 10 points and three rebounds, while Michelle Brandao earned her first 17 minutes of action on the hardwood for this season and poured in a career high eight points, five assists and grabbed three rebounds for the Lady Monarchs.

After shooting a blistering 52.4% from the field in the first half, the Terriers cooled down by shooting 32.4% in the second half. For the game Old Dominion shot 39.3% from the floor and connected on 6-13 (46.2%) from three-point range. ODU’s defense did what they do best and forced BU into a total of 18 turnovers, which is one below ODU’s season average.

Shae Kelley notched her second consecutive and impressive double-double, as well as filled up the entire stat sheet in Old Dominion’s victory over BU in Springfield, Mass. Against the Terriers, Kelley went for 19 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocked shots. Following the contest, Shae was named the MassMutual Player of the Game. Shae is now averaging 15.6 ppg (leads team) while connecting on 45.9% of her FGA (leads team) and 10.9 rpg (leads team); she also has tallied 20 assists (leads team), 11 blocked shots (leads team) and 18 steals (leads team) in just 7 games so far this season.

Following Wednesday’s game, sophomore guard from Norfolk, Va. (Princess Anne HS), Galaisha Goodhope will be available for autographs.
