2013 Men's Singles Participants with Bio's
FLUSHING, N.Y. – Old Dominion University’s Carlos Lopez Villa (Jr./Madrid, Spain) took down New Mexico’s Samir Iftikhar (Jr./United Kingdom) in straight sets (6-4, 7-5) on Thursday in the First Round of 32 of the 2013 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA Billie Jean National King Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
Nationally, the ITA had Iftikhar ranked No. 115 coming into this season, while Lopez Villa held a national ranking of No. 59. Next up for Lopez Villa will be a showdown with sixth-seeded and nationally ranked No. 74, Clay Thompson of UCLA. Thompson made quick work of his First Round opponent, Diego Galeano of Baylor, 6-3, 6-3. Thompson is a right-handed junior and reigns from Venice Beach, California.
In the Second Round of 16, Lopez Villa and Thompson are slated to battle it out tomorrow at noon for an opportunity to advance to the Quarterfinals. The winner of Lopez Villa and Thompson’s match will play again on Friday against the winner of Georgia’s Nathan Pasha (nationally ranked No. 31) and Oklahoma’s second-seeded Guillermo Alcorta (nationally ranked No. 36).
