Seven Score Double Figures to Lead ODU over Davis & Elkins, 119-66

NORFOLK, Va. – Seven Lady Monarchs scored in double figures to lift the Old Dominion University women’s basketball team over Davis and Elkins in their one and only exhibition game, 119-66, on Sunday afternoon in front of over 2,000 fans at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. On Sunday, the Lady Monarchs shattered the highest scoring output by a single team (men’s or women’s) at the Ted Constant Center and ended a mere three points shy of the Lady Monarch’s all-time scoring output in any location (122 vs. Va. Union in Norfolk, Va. in 1979).

Previously, the Ted Constant Center record high for points scored by a team was set at 105, by the Lady Monarchs against Hoftsra in 2004, as well as by Charlotte’s men’s team in 2003.

Against Davis and Elkins, Old Dominion was led by George Washington transfer, Chelisa Painter (RJr./Chesapeake, Va.) who scored 22 points on 7-10 shooting and hitting on eight of 11 free throws in just 15 minutes of work. Fellow junior Tiffany Minor went for 17 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Shae Kelley and Stephanie Gardner each added 15 points, while Kelley brought down nine rebounds and Gardner dished out eight assists. Odegua Oigbokie, the true freshman from Memphis, Tenn. finished with 12 points on 6-9 shooting and eight rebounds.

Galaisha Goodhoope (five rebounds, four assists) and Shakeva Richards (5-7 FG) each added 10 points. Senior Becca Allison went for nine points, four rebounds and three assists.

Old Dominion dominated nearly every statistical category on Sunday: points in the paint (64-26), points off turnovers (33-6), second chance points (29-10), fast break points (16-4), as well as bench points (40-19). 

ODU grabbed 64 total rebounds compared to Davis and Elkins 34, Old Dominion dished out 23 assists compared to Davis and Elkins 11. The Lady Monarchs forced Davis and Elkins into 22 turnovers, while giving the ball away 12 times of their own.

The Lady Monarchs shot 51.3% from the field (39-76), 28.6% from three (4-14) and 67.3% from the free throw line (37-55). Davis Elkins was held to 31.9% shooting from the floor (23-72), 24.1% from three (7-29) and 68.4% from the free throw line (13-19). A total of 61 fouls were called on Sunday throughout the contest.

At the under 16:00 media timeout in the first half, ODU jumped out to an early lead over Davis & Elkins, 11-6. George Washington transfer, Chelisa Painter scored four of those, while Minor nailed her first attempted three-pointer.

The Lady Monarchs really picked up the energy and tempo, as they went on a run pushing their advantage to 30-13 with 11:31 remaining in the 1st half. By the 7:42 mark in the first half, a total of eight ODU players had scored a bucket., lifting Old Dominion to a 42-19 lead.

Old Dominion then went into halftime on a 25-10 run boasting a 67-29 advantage, behind 10 points each from Painter, Stephanie Gardner and Odegua Oigbokie. Painter was 3-3 from the field, Gardner was 2-4 (6-7 FT’s and 6 assists) and Oigbokie connected on five of her seven attempts in the first half. Minor also added nine points and eight rebounds in the first 20 minutes of play.

At the half, Old Dominion outscored Davis and Elkins in the paint 34-12, 21-4 on points off turnovers, 15-3 on second chance points and 12-2 on fast break scoring. A total of 37 fouls were whistled in the first half, as the Monarchs went 23-34 (68%) from the charity stripe, and Davis and Elkins shot 9-12 from the free-throw line. ODU outrebounded Davis and Elkins 35-15. Davis and Elkins was led by Ashley Magallanez’s nine first half points, Shermaine Baker chipped in with seven points of her own.

Davis and Elkins played the Lady Monarchs even (13-13) throughout the first six minutes of the second half, while Old Dominion still possessed an 80-42 advantage. From there, ODU outscored Davis and Elkins 14-5, as the Lady Monarchs went up 94-47 with 11:55 to play.

With 7:53 to play ODU led 96-53, as Kelley & Gardner (7 assists) each had 13 points, while Minor (13 rebounds) and Oigbokie each had 12 points. With 3:31 to play, ODU remained in full control with a 109-58 advantage before advancing to a 119-66 victory over Davis and Elkins.

The Lady Monarchs will be back in action in their regular season home opener on Saturday, Nov. 9 when they take on Delaware State at 2 p.m. at the Ted Constant Center. Additionally, ODU will round out November’s home schedule with Virginia Tech on Monday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. and Radford (Girl Scout Day) on Sunday, Nov. 17 for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
