CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Old Dominion women’s field hockey team (13-8) lost 3-2 in the First Round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament.

Old Dominion came out with an offensive burst as Caitlin Walsh rebounded an initial shot by Kelsey Smither to score the game’s opening goal at 13:48 with an assist going to Smither. The goal was the second of the year for Walsh. Wake Forest would answer at 33:02 with a goal by Krysta Wangerin with an assist going to Molly Murphy. The Demon Decons found a way to add one more critical goal before the end of the half. Christine Conroe added her first goal of the season off a corner.

ODU began the second half like they started the first as the Lady Monarchs added the game-tying goal. Christy Longacre followed up an initial shot by Breen and scored at 44:28 with an assist going to Smither to make the score 2-2. ODU seemed to have control of the game until the Big East Offensive Player of the Year ODU forward Rosario Villagra went down with an injury. She would not play the rest of the game. Lady Monarch midfielder Sarah Breen would get a yellow card, which ended up hurting ODU in a big way. During the player advantage Demon Deacon Jess McFadyen shot one from the top circle, which hit just under the crossbar to give Wake Forest the game winner. McFadyen’s fourth goal of the year gave Wake Forest what they needed as Jess Newak got credit for the assist.

ODU was outshot 13-12, and each team had four corners. ODU goalkeeper Megan Hept finished with six saves on 9 shots faced. Wake Forest keeper Dahmen Valerie finished with three saves.
