SALEM, Va. - The Old Dominion University wrestling team defeated No. 8 Wisconsin 20-19 and No. 22 North Carolina 25-6 from the Hokie Duals Sunday afternoon.
"The Hokie Duals was a good measuring stick to show us where we are at and what we need to work on," said ODU head coach Steve Martin. "We had the opportunity to compete against several nationally ranked individuals and teams today. We had several last second let downs in our first match against Rider. Give Rider credit as they made their own breaks. On a positive note we bounced back and fought a lot harder as the day went on. Our kids battled against nationally ranked ACC opponent UNC and Big Ten opponent Wisconsin. When you execute the wins come a little easier. We have a team that is capable of competing at a high level but we need to find consistency in our performance both as a team and as individuals. We will go back to work tomorrow and start getting prepared for the NC State Open next weekend."
Old Dominion had a total of 15 wrestlers compete in the Hokie Duals in Salem, Va. on Nov. 10. Monarch redshirt sophomore Chris Mecate (141) scored a 8-0 major decision over Wisconsin's No. 10 Jesse Theilke. ODU's Jack Dechow (184) earned a 3-2 decision win against UNC's No. 16 Alex Utley and a 13-5 major decision win against Wisconsin's No. 9 Jackson Hein.
Monarch Alexander Richardson finished the day 3-0 after defeating Rider's Curt Delia, UNC's Nick Heilmann and UW's T.J. Ruschell via fall.
ODU lost their first matchup against Rider 20-12, but then bounced back to defeat two ranked teams- ODU 25, North Carolina 6 and ODU 20, Wisconsin 19.
Nine other teams joined Old Dominion University in a Dual Meet competition that was conducted on 5 mats along side the Sixth Annual Hokie Open Individual Tournament. ODU was joined by Virginia Tech, Kent State, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Virginia, Virginia Military Institute, Rider, Tennessee, Chattanooga and Hofstra.
