MOSCOW, IDAHO – Old Dominion’s 59-38 win over Idaho on Saturday was an historic victory for the program, and ODUSports.com takes a look inside all the numbers of the game.
· The win is the first-ever by ODU over an FBS program and also the second road victory of the season.
· For the fifth time this season and 11th in the five years of the ODU program, the Monarchs scored 50 or more points. The 59 points is the most scored against an FBS team, surpassing the 38 ODU scored at East Carolina in the season opener.
· The Monarchs racked up 621 yards of offense, the seventh most in a single-game in program history and the fourth time this season having more than 600-yards of total offense.
· For the first time this season against an FBS team, ODU did not trail at halftime. The score was tied 31-31 at the break.
· The Monarchs came out swinging in the second half, scoring on their first possession and winning the second half, 28-7.
· The ODU defense gave up 334 yards in the first half, but just seven points and 171 yards in the second half.
· For the second time this season and his career, Colby Goodwyn rushed for three touchdowns. The three rushing touchdowns is the second most in a game, which has now been done eight times. Thomas DeMarco has the record of four in one game against North Carolina Central in 2009.
· Goodwyn now has 11 rushing touchdowns on the season, making him the fourth ball carrier in ODU history to have more than 10 scores in a single-season.
· The senior running back now has 24 rushing touchdowns, second most to only DeMarco who has 30.
· Taylor Heinicke completed 40-of-56 passes for 533 yards and four touchdowns. The 533 yards was the third highest by an FBS quarterback this season trailing only Connor Halliday of Washington State (557 vs. Oregon) and Garrett Gilbert of SMU (538 vs. Temple).
· The 533 passing yards is the second most in school history, trailing just Heinicke’s Division I record of 730 yards last year against New Hampshire.
· His 40 completions is the third most in school history while the 56 attempts are the fourth most.
· For the eighth time in his career, Heinicke eclipsed 400-yards passing and the 20th time he has passed for more than 300 yards.
· With four touchdown passes, it was the 20th time in his career he has thrown three or more TD’s in a game.
· For the first time this season Old Dominion had two wide receivers have more than 100-yards receiving in a single-game. Marquel Thomas had 137 yards on seven catches and Antonio Vaughan had 103 yards on three receptions. The Monarchs were close to having two others reach the century mark, as Zach Pascal had 90 yards on five catches and Larry Pinkard had 86 yards on a game-high eight catches.
· Marquel Thomas had a career-game for the Monarchs, as the seven receptions for 137 yards were career highs, as were his two touchdown catches. The 100-yard receiving game is the first of his career.
· For the second time this season, ODU forced three or more turnovers and the three turnovers is the most forced against an FBS team.
· In the first quarter, D.J. Simon intercepted his team-leading third pass of the season to set up an ODU field goal. Sandy Chapman, starting his first career game at cornerback, intercepted his first career pass on the final play of the game. The third turnover came after a Heinicke interception, Trey Williams intercepted a deflected pass but the Monarchs forced a fumble that Zach Pascal recovered for a first down to clinch the ODU victory.
· The four sacks that ODU had were the most in a game this season, and all four were by different players. Reggie Owens, Terrell Reid and Preston Smith all recorded sacks while Jude Brenya and Rashaad Coward shared a sack. For Owens, Brenya and Coward, it was their first sacks of the season.
· Paul Morant and Fellonte Misher led the Monarchs with eight tackles apiece.
The Monarchs host Campbell Saturday at p.m. in the final home game of the season. ODU will honor 12 student-athletes in a pregame ceremony.
