AKRON, OHIO—ODU sophomore golfer Ashton Newsom (Chesapeake, VA.) tied for 13th and junior Jamison Randall 24th to lead the Monarchs to a 12th place finish at the Firestone Invitational at the Firestone Country Club. ODU finished the 54 hole event at 889.
Newsom shot 74-73-71=218, while Jamison Randall was 72-76-72=220. Stuart Grehan of Eastern Michigan won the individual medalist honors after shooting 73-67-67 for nine under 207, three strokes ahead of Carr Vernan of Akron. USC Aiken won the tournament by two strokes over Washington State.
Newsom finished 5th in par 3 scoring at 3.00, 13th in par 5 scoring at 4.58 (-5) and second in birdies with 14. Freshman Thomas Henderson (Sterling, MA.) tied for fifth in total pars with 36.
ODU returns to action, Oct. 20-22 in its ODU/Outerbanks Tournament at the Kilmarlic Golf Course in Powell’s Point, NC.
