TULSA, Ok. - ODU men’s tennis began competing in the ITA All-American Championships Sept. 28. The ITA features the best tennis players across the nation and takes place until October 6 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The Monarchs participated in the tournament for three days, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Junior Carlos Lopez Villa, currently ranked No. 59 was entered into the qualifying draw and senior Dante Terenzio along with sophomores Jonas Kuwert and Zvonomir Podvinski all participated in the pre-qualifying draw. 

Sophomore Zvonomir Podvinski began tournament play with singles victories over Dylan Comerford (Winthrop University) 6-3, 6-3 and Mateus Silva (Purdue University) 6-7 (7), 6-4, 1-0 Ret. Podvinski was ousted in the next round by Oystein Steiro of North Carolina, 4-6, 2-6.

Lopez Villa surprisingly took an exit after the first round on Monday at the hands of Oklahoma University’s Andrew Harris, 7-6 (7), 3-6, 3-6. Harris won doubles at both the 2012 Wimbledon Junior Championships and Roland Garros Junior French Championships. Kuwert played on Saturday and lost to Boris Arias (LSU) 5-7, 3-6 and Terenzio lost to Zach Wilder (Mississippi) on Saturday, 4-6, 5-7.

ODU will compete at the UVA Fall Classic in Charlottesville, Virginia this Friday October 4.
