Lady Monarchs Fall to Rice, 5-2

HOUSTON, Texas – The Old Dominion women’s soccer team fell to the Rice Owls on Friday night, 5-2, at the Rice Soccer Complex in Houston, Texas.

Scoring started off in the 10th minute by Rice’s sophomore Lauren Hughes, when she intercepted Erin Kinz’s pass and placed her sixth goal of the season into ODU’s net.

Old Dominion’s Jessie Klamut quickly answered in the 12th minute with her fourth goal of the season, which leads the Lady Monarchs in both goals and points this season.

In the 12th minute, Rice’s Lauren Hughes struck again to give the Owls a 2-1 advantage. In the 35th minute, Rice’s sophomore Jasmine Isokpunwu headed a goal of her own off a free kick into the Lady Monarch’s goal to stretch the lead to 3-1. Two minutes before halftime, Jessica Howard, a redshirt junior from Dallas, Texas, finished an assist from Holly Hargreaves, lifting Rice to a 4-1 lead over Old Dominion.

Old Dominion scored very quickly to start the second half, when Melanie Oakes’ pass found Devin Dougherty in the 56th minute to cut ODU’s deficit to 4-2. Less than one minute later, Rice’s Gabriela Iribarne scored her fifth goal of the year, notching the Owls’ lead to 5-2. Iribarne’s finish was assisted by Lauren Hughes.

ODU led the shot count 18-15, as Rice now advances to 6-7-2. Old Dominion now falls to 1-11-3.
