ODU Field Hockey Moves to No. 10 After Maryland Upset

NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion women's field hockey team climbed five spots this week, from No. 15 to No. 10,  in the latest NFHCA poll on the heels of its 3-2 upset on Sunday over  No. 1 ranked Maryland.

ODU (9-6) has won eight consecutive games dating back to Sept. 22, which is currently the longest winning streak in the Big East and second for current teams ranked in the top-20 behind  Penn State (10 wins in a row). During the Lady Monarchs winning streak they have outscored opponents 33-4.

The Lady Monarchs were recently No. 10 in the most recent NCAA Field Hockey RPI rankings. Four Big East teams are ranked, Connecticut is No. 4, Louisville is No. 14 and Temple is No. 17.

Junior forward Rosario Villagra was recently named Big East Offensive Player of the Week. She had four goals and an assist on the weekend against William & Mary and Maryland.

ODU plays No. 4 Connecticut at noon on Friday and No. 2 North Carolina at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the L.R. Hill Complex on ODU's campus. Sunday is senior day for ODU backs Danielle Clutter and Christy Longacre.

Both home games are Monarch Media Games of the Week and available for viewing at odusports.com . ODU Sports Properties Ted Alexander and Katelyn Smither (ODU '11)  will call Friday's game against Connecticut. Alexander will join ODU Hall of Famer Kathy Fosina Mustain (ODU '92) to call the North Carolina match.

Sunday's game against North Carolina is also the Championship Effort game for ODU fall sports. The Championship Effort games are a school spirit contest that also feature team community service component among ODU's 18 sports.
