NORFOLK, Va. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) recently announced that Old Dominion University men's tennis junior Carlos Lopez Villa is nationally ranked No. 59 in the 2013 Division I Men’s Preseason Singles Rankings.
Lopez Villa finished last season ranked No. 86 in the country in the final Intercollegiate Athletic Association poll of the season. Lopez Villa is the first Monarch to be ranked in the top-100 in the final ITA poll since Aleksandr Selezney was ranked No. 85 to end the 2009 season.
A native of Madrid, Spain, Lopez Villa finished the year 18-1, with three victories over ranked opponents. He started the year winning his first 13 matches before losing to a top-60 opponent from Virginia Tech. He rebounded by winning his next five matches on the year.
Lopez Villa earned First-Team All-Conference USA accolades and earned Second-Team doubles honors with partner Can Centinel. He became the first Monarch to earn C-USA Athlete of the Week honors, which he earned twice last season.
