NORFOLK, Va. - Junior Rosario Villagra scored three goals and added two assists to help lead the Lady Monarchs to a 7-0 win over Quinnipiac Sunday afternoon. The Lady Monarchs improve to 4-6 while the Bobcats drop to 5-5.
"Our defensive play was very solid today," said ODU head coach Andrew Griffiths. "Our backs and midfield did well and we limited Quinnipiac to only a couple of opportunities. We also moved the ball well and scored some excellent goals, which was a reward for a lot of the hard work we have been doing all over the field."
Villagra gave the Monarchs a 1-0 lead at 21:16 off a rebound in front of the net with an assist going to Caitlin Walsh. In the second half, Old Dominion did not let up on either side of the field. Junior Cassandra Wagner scored at 45:41 with an assist credited to Sarah Breen. Villagra would tally her second goal of the day at 52:55 and nine minutes later would score her third goal of the day. Wagner scored less than two minutes following Villagra's hat trick to make it 5-0 ODU with an assist going to Kelsey Smither. Sophomore forward Breen would score her first of the day (third on the weekend) at 63:19 with assists going to Villagra and Smither. Emily Harting tallied her first of the weekend at 69:45 with an assist to Villagra.
ODU outshot the Bobcats, 21-3 (8-0 in first half) and had 12 corners to the Bobcats 1. ODU Sophomore goalkeeper Megan Hept faced only three shots and received her fourth win and first shutout on the year. Hept only allowed one goal this weekend against Providence (2-1). Quinnipiac keeper Megan Conaboy stopped 7 shots on the day.
ODU plays Georgetown Sunday at 2 p.m in a Big East conference play from the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
