Austerberry and Hayde Named Team Captains

NORFOLK, Va. - Senior Emily Austerberry and Junior Karen Hayde have been named captains for the 2014 season, Old Dominion head coach Heather Holt announced Friday.

Austerberry (Barto,Pa./Boyertown) started in 13 games and saw action in 15 of the 17 games last season. She finished second on the team with 27 goals scored. She scored four goals in the win over American (3/9). She also tacked on an additional six points in assists. Austerberry won 15 draw controls, scooped up 20 ground balls, and caused five turnovers.

“I’m very excited about it and I feel very honored,” said the senior captain Austerberry. “I can’t wait to help build our program and take it to another level!”

Hayde (Phoenixville,Pa./Phoenixville) started in goal in all 17 games last season. She led the team and was ranked 31st nationally with 44 ground balls picked up. Hayde made 141 saves during her sophomore season, which ranked 16th nationally. Additionally she caused four turnovers.

“I’m honored to be put in this position,” said the junior captain Hayde. “I am excited to see what our team has to offer come spring.”

ODU hosts its annual Alumni game during Homecoming Saturday October 5 at 10 a.m. followed by a tailgate before the ODU football game.
