ODUSports.com and Monarch Media present a weekly Monarch Spotlight that gives fans a chance to learn more about their favorite student-athletes at Old Dominion. The latest installment of Monarch Spotlight narrows in on junior women’s field hockey player, Kelsey Smither.

Kelsey was recently selected to the U.S Under-21 Junior World Cup Team after competing in the U.S U-21 National Championship in Norfolk. She has played in every single game during her two plus seasons with the Lady Monarchs, totaling 56 consecutive games (and counting). This season Kelsey has scored 5 points on 6 shots. In the 2012 season Kelsey recorded a team-high 11 assists which was tied for second in the CAA and was named to the NFHCA All-South Region Second Team and was a Second Team All-State and CAA selection. In the 2011 season she was WomensFieldHockey.com National Rookie of the year and was selected as CAA Rookie of the Year. She scored four goals and 21 points on 22 shots. During that season Kelsey was named to the Under-21 USA Field Hockey National Team.

The Lady Monarchs return to action Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. as they host Providence at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex. The game is the Big East home opener for the Lady Monarchs and is the Monarch Media Game of the Week, which will be broadcasted by Ted Alexander and Katelyn Smither (Kelsey's older sister)--ODU '11. The first 100 fans to arrive will receive a free Big East T-shirt!
